4-H Summer Fun is a collection of educational workshops, tours, and hands-on activities planned especially for Rutherford County youth. This special program is designed to give youth positive learning opportunities and focus on developing life skills. Summer Fun is made possible by dedicated 4-H volunteers and N.C. Cooperative Extension, Rutherford County Center staff. 4-H invites all children to participate in the Fun.

Registration

4-H is a non-formal youth development organization and is open to all youth, Age 5-18 in Rutherford County. All fees are for educational supplies, resources, admission fees, limited insurance, and refreshments. Limited insurance will be provided for all participants. All 4-H participants must be registered as Members in 4-H Online for all waivers and health forms. These must be completed and approved no later than 1 week before the participant’s first session.

Registration is open. You may register during regular office hours of 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Registration will be taken in person only. No registration will be accepted by telephone. Payment is due at the time of registration. Activities are filled on a first-come, first-serve basis. Register only one child per form. Additional forms are available at the Extension Office or online. Refunds will only be made if choice of class is canceled.

SafeSitter – Tuesday, June 2, 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Safe Sitter® is designed to prepare students in grades 6-8 to be safe when they’re home alone, watching younger siblings, or babysitting.

Aspiring babysitters (boys and girls) can learn how to prevent unsafe situations, practice good safety habits, learn tips to manage behavior that will help them stay in control of themselves and the children in their care. Students also learn the ages and stages of child development, and learn age-appropriate games and activities to entertain and manage younger children.as well as practice diapering.

Students will learn skills such as choking rescue and basic CPR (does not include CPR certification). Students will also learn a system to help them assess and respond to injuries and illnesses.

The ability to screen jobs, discuss fees, and greet employers will set students up for success now and in the future. Students practice these skills through various role plays.

Completion of the course will provide participants with a SafeSitter certification card.

STEM Fun- Friday, June 6, 9:00 a.m.- 2:00 p.m.    

Students will get to explore the world of science. We will make wooden derby cars and race them. We will also do neat science experiments. Youth will love engineering their own designs for class competitions such as paper rockets and egg drop experiments.

Ages: 9-13                                        Cost: $10

String Art – Tuesday, June 10, 12:00-4:00 p.m.

String art is very popular and fun. It is a great way to express your creativity. You can make many different shapes with many different colors. String Art is done by wrapping colored thread or embroidery floss around pins in a defined pattern. You can make string art for yourself or as a gift for your loved one. As a wall décor it can be very stylish and cool for your room.

Budding Scientists – Wednesday, June 11, 12:00 – 4:00 p.m.

Explore science with us as we perform various experiments. We will make slime, bubbles, ice cream, and more through fun, safe, and hands-on projects.

Ages: 5-8                                     Cost: $10

 

Lazy 5 Ranch– Friday, June 20  9:00 a.m. – 4-:00 p.m.

Lazy 5 Ranch is a unique educational experience for people of all ages located in Mooresville, NC. You can experience domestic and exotic animals from six continents including giraffe, zebra, buffalo, cattle, sheep and lots more.

Ages: 8-16                                        Cost: $20

 

Magic of Electricity– Monday, June 23  9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Learn about electricity! Do you know how the electricity runs through your house and makes the lights come on? Come join us for a fun filled time of learning about electricity. We will have the power company there to tell us about careers, do Magic of Electricity activities as well as make a project you can use at home.

Ages: 10-15                                       Cost: $18

Kids and Chefs – Wednesday-Friday, June 25-27, 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

This hands-on day camp is taught by local chefs and Cooperative Extension staff with a focus on agriculture and nutrition. Each day of camp features cooking, games, and crafts. Participants will learn about farm production, food selection, cooking techniques, etiquette, and safe food handling. All supplies will be provided. Youth who love to try new foods will love this class! Lunch and snacks will be provided.

Ages: 10-14                                       Cost: $75

What to bring: Wear closed toe shoes each day.

 

Nature Buddies – Monday, June 30, 9:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m.

Come learn about nature, including plants and insects. We will get to dig for worms and learn how they help our soil. We will go on a nature walk, play insect games, study habitats, life cycles, and more!

Ages: 5-7                                          Cost: $10

Stars, Stripes, and Smiles Tuesday, July 1, 9:00 a.m.- 1:00 p.m.

Join us for a fun and creative art class where  you’ll make 2 unique projects. First, paint a charming patriotic barn canvas with acrylics- complete with rustic textures, American flag accents, and a countryside vibe perfect for celebrating our national pride. Then, paint a clay pot with a whimsical face, giving personality to your own handmade creation. All supplies will be provided.

Ages: 8 and up                                 Cost: $20

 

NASCAR   Wednesday, July 2,  8:30 a.m.- 4:00 p.m.

Do you feel the need for speed? We will tour the NASCAR Hall of Fame and learn what it takes to be on a pit crew and participate in a workshop where we will learn how to design a race car and get to bring home our creation. We will meet at the Extension office and travel together.

Ages: 9 and up                                  Cost: $30

Cultures Around the World – Thursday, July  10, 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Test your global knowledge and explore customs, crafts, and foods from various cultures, focusing on Japan, Norway, Mexico, and Costa Rica. We will play games, make snacks and more!

Ages: 9-15                                                Cost: $12

Conserving Wildlife at Riverbanks – Friday, July  11, 8:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.

Explore the wildlife at Riverbanks Zoo where they have over 3,000 animals and 5,700 varieties of plants! We will also participate in a scavenger hunt to learn more about how humans impact their survival and ways you can contribute.

Ages: 9-15                                                Cost: $35

What to bring: Money for lunch, refillable water bottle. Wear good walking shoes and sunscreen.

 

Gone Fishing– Friday, July 18  8:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

We will travel up to the Marion Fish Hatchery to see how fish are raised to stock your favorite fishing streams and ponds. We will enjoy a few hours of fishing in well-stocked pond. We will have the opportunity to catch bass, bream, and catfish. Fishing rods, bait and materials will be supplied.

Ages: 9-15                                         Cost: $10

What to bring: Bagged lunch and drink. Wear sunscreen and sunglasses/hat.

Linville Caverns & Gem Mining– Thursday, June 24  9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

We will tour the subterranean world and learn the history of Linville Caverns. Afterwards, we will venture up to the Linville Gorge to enjoy our picnic lunches. We will also enjoy gem mining in the afternoon.

Ages: 9-15                                         Cost: $25

What to bring: Bagged lunch and drink. Wear shoes that strap or lace, no flip flops, crocs, or slick shoes.

 

Sweet Confections Thursday, August 7, 9:00 p.m.-1:00 p.m.

We will learn how to make different types of candy and treats such as fudge, peanut butter balls, lollipops, mints, and more. Participants will learn how to use candy-making equipment, follow a recipe, prepare a variety of party foods, and package them for sharing. Each participant will receive a recipe booklet. Containers and packaging will be provided.

Ages: 10 and up                                Cost: $ 15

What to bring: Bagged lunch and drink.

All health and permission forms must be completed and approved in 4-H Online. Visit 4-H Online to register your child(ren).
