There are all types of gardeners, those who specialize in growing a particular fruit or flower, those who prefer a particular season, such as summer, those who are dedicated to growing what can be preserved and used to feed their family all year-round, gardening has room for everyone. There are even gardeners who only grow plants in containers or inside. All are perfect ways to connect to the landscape and plants in meaningful ways. Growing food and connecting to our ecosystem is a part of everyone’s heritage, and while the specific plants and growing practices might be different among individuals, the connection to place and the value that plants bring to our lives is universal.

While formal gardening education may not be for everyone, it can be helpful to ground in the basics of gardening education. If you want to understand the relationship between soil and plants, how to plan and design a garden space, to identify edible plants and learn how to cultivate them, common disease and insect issues of the area, what flowers bring pollinators in, and more, then gardening classes might just be for you. It’s never too late to learn more about gardening and to connect with others in the county who share your love of plants.

The N.C. Cooperative Extension of Rutherford County office is proud to host the Extension Master Gardener℠  program of Rutherford County, a class series and volunteering opportunity that consists of gardening classes that will cover all of the topics listed, and more. The program consists of 12 classes that will dig into various gardening topics, field trips, and at-home learning to deepen understanding. Students are able to learn together, and the program is for everyone over the age of 18 who is interested in gardening.

There is a volunteering component of the program that provides adult learners with the opportunity to engage with your community and share what you have learned with your neighbors, schools, churches and more, in a way that excites you and gives back to your community. Some of our volunteers work with farms and community gardens that donate produce to food relief agencies across the county, they help with school gardens and gardening programs, assist homeowners by working through their landscape challenges, and more.

If you are interested in the program, would like to learn more, and to see if it’s the right fit for you, please join us for our upcoming informational sessions being held at the N.C. Cooperative Extension, Rutherford County Center: 193 Callahan-Koon Road, Suite 164 in Spindale. We’re at the backside of the Senior Center.

Informational sessions will be held on July 29, from 5–6 p.m., August 5, from noon–1 p.m., and August 25, 2021, from 5–6 p.m.

Sign-up is not mandatory to attend the program’s informational sessions, however, if you would like an email reminder of the info sessions, we recommend registering via Eventbrite, links are on our website: go.ncsu.edu/rutherfordemgv.
