On September 23, 2017, 4-H showmen from Chatham, Granville, Guilford, Hoke, Moore, Randolph, Richmond, Rockingham, and Stanly Counties successfully exhibited 62 meat goats and 26 beef heifers and steers during the 8th annual Chatham County 4-H Livestock Show, held on the grounds of the newly-constructed Chatham County Agriculture & Conference Center in Pittsboro. Under the watchful eye of Judge Callie Birdsell Carson, 4-H members ranging in age from 9-18 competed in showmanship and conformation classes throughout the course of the day, including non-competitive shows for Pee Wee and Cloverbud youth entrants ages 3-8. Chatham County 4-H distributed over $1900 in prize premiums to participating 4-H showmen which will help support 4-H scholarship opportunities and future project work.

The Chatham County 4-H Livestock Show operates as 1 of 12 shows which form the 4-H Farm Credit Showmanship Circuit. Through the generous sponsorship provided by Carolina Farm Credit and Cape Fear Farm Credit, the circuit has provided numerous 4-H youth with the opportunity to exhibit their hard work through demonstration of showmanship skills and high quality stock. As a proud participating United Way of Chatham County agency, Chatham County 4-H was grateful to receive show sponsorship support from the Chatham County Farm Bureau, Pittsboro Ford, Pittsboro Feed, Pittsboro Pet Supply, Performance Livestock & Feed, Country Farm & Home, New Horizons West, and James River Equipment.

In between the cattle and goat shows, Chatham County Manager Renee Paschal and County Commissioners Jim Crawford, Mike Dasher, Diana Hales, Karen Howard, and Walter Petty took a turn in the ring with pigs and heifers after getting tips from the 4-Hers!
